My school district has cancelled Eclipse Day for the students As mentioned above. But not cancelled for teachers. Here the totality begins at 3:14 and ends at 3:16, roughly. My school district thought it would be important enough to the students to let them go for the day do they could experience the event of a lifetime!

Perspective: the last time we had a total solar eclipse here was in 1925. The next time will be in 2144.

So good. Day canceled. Teachers being given alternate work for the day but at my school the principal scheduled an end of day staff meeting from 2:30 to 3:30 in the library. I mean, that's petty, vindictive, and spiteful. On all levels of management, right on up to the director of education for our district.

Back in September I had an inkling of this. I scheduled a personal day for the 8th, nine months in advance. While I'm sitting under a (hopefully clear, blue) sky watching the sun getting eclipsed, my poor colleagues will be stuck inside a windowless school library being babout the usual we could be doing better.

Teacher workers, I urge you to call in sick tomorrow. And send anonymous critical mail from hotmail addresses to your directors of education and admin teams.

lightscamerasnaction. 11 hr. ago Why does part of me think the principal is gonna be like "surprise, we're all going outside to watch the eclipse! Hope you brought your own special glasses!" as a "team-bonding" activity 175 Reply Share

Beached Bottlenose 13 hr. ago Our district made us stay inside and even avoid sunlight during the last eclipse. Ignoring a teachable moment.

ATFLA10 12 hr. ago I'm near the west coast of Florida and all schools are open but in my county, outdoor activities and sports are postponed until after 4. Starting to think about the next eclipse in 21 years which will go over Florida. It will be on Saturday so school closures won't be an issue.

zephyrseija 12 hr. ago My kids' school is taking all the kids outside to view the eclipse, with safety glasses provided and all that. I don't think a day off is warranted but the administration should absolutely be making sure everyone has the opportunity to witness a singular event like this. Hopefully it isn't cloudy

somedumbguy55. 11 hr. ago The end of day meeting is bs, but I get why they canceled class. The liability issues with the kids is a lot and, at least here, they had PD on Friday that they changed to Monday. Two birds one stone.

RavenWolfPS2 - 7 hr. ago One of the schools I work with sent out an email letting all the parents know the eclipse would be happening and to remind their kids not to stare at the sun. A paragraph later, they said all classes would be continuing at their normally scheduled times and all eclipse glasses were banned from the premises on that day. Looks like some people don't want kids to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
